How to Transition Your Dog From Kibble to Fresh Food

Change Can Be Good — Especially for Your Dog's Bowl

If you've been thinking about switching your dog to fresh food, you're not alone. More and more dog parents across Miami and South Florida are making the move — and seeing real differences in their dogs' energy, digestion, and overall happiness.

But here's the thing: even when the change is a good one, your dog's digestive system needs a little time to adjust. A gradual transition is the kindest way to make the switch — and it sets your dog up for long-term success.

Here's how to do it right.

Why a Gradual Transition Matters

Dogs thrive on routine, and their gut microbiome is no different. Switching foods too quickly — even to something healthier — can cause temporary digestive upset like loose stools or gas. This isn't a sign that fresh food is wrong for your dog. It's just your dog's system adapting to something new and better.

A slow, steady transition gives the digestive system time to adjust, making the whole experience smoother for both of you.

The 7-Day Transition Plan

This is the approach we recommend at KeyCan — simple, gentle, and effective:

Days 1–2: 25% Fresh / 75% Kibble

Start by replacing about a quarter of your dog's usual meal with fresh food. Mix it in well so your dog gets used to the new smell and texture alongside something familiar.

Days 3–4: 50% Fresh / 50% Kibble

You're halfway there. Most dogs start showing real enthusiasm around this point — fresh food smells incredible to them compared to dry kibble.

Days 5–6: 75% Fresh / 25% Kibble

Almost fully transitioned. Keep an eye on digestion and energy levels. Most dogs are doing great by this stage.

Day 7: 100% Fresh Food

Welcome to the fresh side. 🎉 Your dog is now eating the way nature intended — real ingredients, real nutrition, real joy at mealtime.

Tips to Make the Transition Even Smoother

  • Go slower if needed. Some dogs — especially seniors or those with sensitive stomachs — may need 10–14 days. That's completely fine.
  • Keep portions consistent. Don't overfeed during the transition. Follow the serving guidelines for your dog's weight.
  • Watch for signs of adjustment. Mild changes in stool are normal in the first few days. If symptoms persist beyond a week, check in with your vet.
  • Stay consistent. Try to feed at the same times each day to support your dog's routine.

What to Expect After the Transition

Once your dog is fully on fresh food, most pet parents notice changes within the first few weeks:

  • More excitement at mealtime (no more picky eating!)
  • Softer, shinier coat
  • Better digestion and more regular stools
  • Steadier energy throughout the day

Elliot, one of the golden retrievers behind the KeyCan story, went through this exact transition — and it changed everything. That experience is why we built KeyCan the way we did: simple ingredients, real food, real results.
